master of arts in cinema and media studies ﹙ma﹚

the two-year m.a. program offers students the opportunity to pursue cinema and media studies through coursework and an m.a. thesis project. students are expected to give primary attention to an area of expertise of their choice while training in the broader theoretical, critical, and historical contexts of the field.

the ma was renamed to “cinema and media studies” from “film studies” for the cohort entering in september 2019. ubc’s ma in film studies existed between 1984 and 2018 and graduated nearly 50 students in that time.

faculty research specialties include strengths in contemporary cinemas and media culture, one that highlights media and film theory, cult cinema, documentary studies, early cinema, feminist and post-feminist media studies, american, canadian and european cinemas, television studies, and sound studies. there are particular strengths in contemporary anglophone cinema and television products and cultures within a global context. our students occasionally engage with professors and students in our renowned directing, design and film production graduate programs.

the mdm is canada’s first professional graduate program in digital media focusing on the creation of digital media solutions for real world problems. students come from a variety of backgrounds including filmmaking, engineering, game design, business analysis, architecture, software engineers, artists, primatology, biology, and advertising to name a few.

housed at the centre for digital media in vancouver bc, this intensive 12 month program engages students through coursework and projects to develop essential communication, collaboration & leadership skills. the unique curriculum meets the needs of the new and expanding digital media markets across all business verticals including but not limited to healthcare, education, business and the entertainment industry.

guided by top-level faculty and industry mentors, students work closely with clients and peers on team-based, industry supported digital media projects. this experience allows graduates the know-how and confidence to work at the highest level across all sectors as creators, producers, innovators or entrepreneurs.

upload up to five digital samples or works that best demonstrate your skills in digital media. you can draw from a wide range of items including exhibited art, designs, film or video, computer software code ﹙please include and document at least 100 lines of original code that you created﹚, engineering designs or some other product that resulted from your previous work. please include a 250 - 500 word summary explaining how the items in the collection relate to each other and to your strengths. if an item is a collaborative effort, please clearly state your role in its production.
